Outdoor Management Active 2024 – Present

WaidPlan

A cross-platform hunting ground management tool I built for my own hunting group — and have been using daily for six months. Replaces the patchwork of paper maps, WhatsApp groups, and spreadsheets that most German hunting groups rely on.

The Problem

Hunting ground management in Germany involves territory mapping, wildlife population tracking, infrastructure maintenance, and coordination between multiple hunters. Most groups rely on a mix of paper records, shared folders, and group chats. Knowledge lives in people’s heads, and when someone leaves the group, it leaves with them.

I experienced this firsthand managing my own hunting ground. You drive out to a hunting stand at dusk and find two rungs in the ladder are broken — the wood got soft and nobody reported it. Now it’s too late to go somewhere else and your evening is ruined. Observations from last season were in someone’s notebook. Nobody tracked what crops were planted in the surrounding fields — which matters because crop rotation directly affects where game feeds, finds cover, and moves through the territory.

Decisions That Shaped the Product

Spatial-first, not list-first. Every hunting ground is fundamentally a map. Observations, infrastructure, areas — they all have a location. Building around an interactive map rather than lists and forms was the foundational decision. Everything lives on the map first, in tables second.

Scent drift calculation. Before every hunt, experienced hunters check wind direction to avoid spooking game with their scent. Other hunting apps show basic wind direction — WaidPlan calculates actual scent drift cones based on real-time wind speed, direction, and terrain, then overlays them on the map. You can see exactly which blinds are downwind before you leave the house. The kind of feature you only build right if you actually sit in those blinds yourself.

Collaborative by default. Hunting grounds are managed by groups, not individuals. Every piece of data is shared. New members join via invitation code and immediately see the full territory picture — infrastructure, observations, areas, everything.
